I need a nigerian african recipe for something I once had...?

while I was in university. I had a nigerian roommate and she made this wonderful beef stew with loads of tomato sauce and chili peppers.. but what she served it over is what im hunting for.. She used some sort of starchy powder like flour or potato buds or something.. and she mixed in water and a little oil and cooked this over the stove in a pot, with a huge thick wooden spoon, it looked something like raw bread dough.. But she did cook it.. the way it was served was in a plate, you'd scoop up of it, roll it around in your fingers, and make an inditation with your thumb in the center and dip it into the beef stew and eat it.. It was wonderful and I have no idea what it is or called.. thanks...
